Smart Carbon Farming – Interreg North-West Europe

Smart Carbon Farming connects farmers, technology, research and policy to foster an inclusive agricultural transition and develop resilient, sustainable farms in Northwest Europe. Many current agricultural practices deplete the soils on which they are based. If we continue on this path, we risk destabilizing our food systems through loss of fertility and soil erosion. Carbon farming is a key part of the solution. By rewarding farmers who store carbon and/or reduce their emissions, this approach promotes healthier farming methods, such as regenerative agriculture, which restore rather than degrade soils. Thanks to its potential to revitalize and protect farmland, the acceleration of carbon farming is fundamental to achieving an economically resilient agricultural ecosystem in north-western Europe and beyond.
However, for carbon farming to truly take root as a viable business model, we need cheaper and reliable monitoring solutions, support for farmers to explore these solutions, and alignment between policy, research and innovation.
“The Smart Carbon Farming project illustrates our commitment to providing farmers with the tools and knowledge they need to move to efficient and economically viable methods of sequestering carbon in soils. By bridging the gap between technology and field implementation, we will not only have a positive impact on the environment, but also aim to ensure the prosperity and greater autonomy of farming communities across Europe.” Vincent Levavasseur
The Smart Carbon Farming project brings together 11 partners from 5 countries, with a wide range of expertise in agriculture, policy and technology.
– 3 technology innovation players
– 6 regional impact partners
– 2 knowledge partners
Together, we aim to accelerate carbon farming by customizing and testing monitoring solutions, aligning policy with research and innovation, and training farmers to adopt carbon farming practices.

HORIZON-MISS-2023-SOIL-01- SUS-SOIL

2022 – 2026

According to the EU Soil Strategy, around 60 to 70% of the soils in the European Union are not healthy and suffering from severe degradation processes. The degradation processes primarily affecting the topsoils are also depleting the subsoil health reducing the ecosystem services delivery. However, subsoil knowledge is scarce in spite of the relevance it has.

SUS-SOIL is a 4-year project adopting multidisciplinary approach that will develop a set of 15 Subsoil-Living Labs (LLs) to inventory, analyse and benchmark different agroecology subsoil management (ASM) and land uses and their impacts on the subsoil spatial variations and dynamics to best combine ASM practices in rural and urban areas within a global regional context. SUS-SOIL results will be the start point to increase the awareness of land managers and public authorities to understand the subsoil threats and risks, support EU agroecological transformation tackling subsoils and increasing ecosystem services delivery, promote water security and climate change mitigation of rural and urban ecosystems.

The main outcomes include: (1) develop a subsoil/soil monitoring database (S-DB) able to be interoperable with the LUCAS and ESDAC databases, (ii) the analysis long-term ASM land use and management of 3 relevant types of soil per LL and the relationship with rural and urban ecosystem services delivery including modelling, (iii) develop a set of farm idiotypes per LL mixing the ASM best practices as an alternative to conventional systems to enhance the ecosystem services provision at regional level for citizens through (iv) a Subsoil Decision Support Tool (S-DST) considering soil degradation and relevant business models and propose a (v) subsoil policy strategy framework to foster ASM best practices.

Inspections of fruits and vegetables at production sites and food processing facilities are often conducted on random batches using techniques that can take up to several days to yield results. The analysis of data collected during these inspections, in addition to being time-consuming, can also be costly, leading to a reduction in the frequency of inspections, which in turn increases the risk of microbiological and chemical contamination. To address this issue, the EU-funded GRACED project aims to develop an innovative sensor that will enable faster, more cost-effective, and reliable monitoring of food quality and safety within fruit and vegetable value chains. This tool, which is low-cost and compact, will be capable of scanning for a list of seven contaminants (both chemical and microbiological) and will be usable by farmers in the field.

In collaboration with MSV, we are conducting research on the relationship between the nutritional and organoleptic quality of vegetables (grown using MSV, bio-intensive, or conventional methods). To this end, large-scale taste tests (including carrots, tomatoes, and storage carrots) as well as laboratory tests (such as Brix levels, minerals, etc.) are being organized.
